EM 08 Finals Deutschland vs. Espana

After getting back to the apartment at 6ish in the morning and a quick nap it was time for day 2 in Berlin. I got up around 10 since I couldn't sleep and went looking for breakfast. Unfortunately, even with Berlin being the capital, the vast majority of stores are shut down on Sunday. I found a security guard and he motioned me to a kiosk 500m away. After a soda and some ice cream I ran into the same guard who then let me on the roof of the complex so that I could get a better view of the city. The heart of downtown was obstructed, but the rest of the city was very nice. Everything is so green here it is amazing.
We finally got moving around 1 and made it to Alexanderplatz around 1:30. The public transportation system here is very good. It would be nice in the US, but everything is too spread out and it would require many things to be torn down to make room for a tram line.
After lunch we decided to scope out the Fan Meile area. The line was pretty long to get in so we cancelled plans for further sight seeing to ensure we had a spot on the mile. Access was closed at 6PM for the semi finals and this was the EM 08 Finals... Not to be missed. So for everyone who has been to a UofM football game you know the Big House is the largest viewing venue in the US at over 100K people. Now put 5 times as many people onto a 5 lane road and that's where we were. Now liquor them up, add a hint of Nazism, a lack of bathing, and you'll have the Berlin Fan Meile. Over 500K drunk, highly patriotic, crazy, smelly people, and 3 posers who did not stink (that would be us).
Expecting a German victory we hung on the outskirts of the main stage and viewing area talking to random people etc... We of course were Canadians from Toronto and Windsor. Even 4 hours before the game started the place was absolutely packed. We decided that if Germany won we needed to be front row center, front row being about 20m back from the screen to see it well. Surrounding the main stage was a low fenced in area. At about 7 we started talking to the guy guarding the back door to this enclosed space. At the same time we were talking to some Berliners who were concerned about their spots and wanted to be in the same area as we did. We told them not to worry we would get in, but they didn't believe us... that or the one girl was upset since I knocked part of Loriks beer out of his hand and she just so happened to be sitting underneath it... Regardless, as Vlad put it, 'grease the right monkey and anything is possible.' So at about 8:15 with half an hour to game time we strolled into the spot no problem and got prime viewing position.
Imagine the student section at an MSU basketball game with 6 hours of tailgating under their belts and that was the crowd we were in... except everyone had flags. If anyone ever has the chance I would highly suggest adopting a team and going to the capital where they have a public viewing. Just make sure it's not too hot as people were dropping like flies in the crowd. Since we waltzed in so late in the game and both Lorik and Vlad had 2 beers everyone was grabbing for them. A gigantic turkish guy with some roid rage ended up 'buying' both Lorik's and Vlad's last beers. In the end since Germany never scored and lost the game the crowd was pretty tame. Also, the white stripes 7 nation army was apparently the EM Cup theme song...

One final unanswered question: 500K+ people all locked into the middle of the road drinking excessively... where did they pee?

No port-a-potty? Oh that is not cool. Even the parking lots at Red Rocks have port-a-potties for pre-show tailgating needs. They sell Fat Tire in cans now which made for super awesome tailgating. Over 9000 hippies rocking out last night. Bodega.
